Traditional Patterns and Modern Techniques: Exploring the Potential of 3D Underglaze Decoration

Yiri Yan, a graduate in ceramic design, embarked on a study tour to Jingdezhen, the birthplace of porcelain, a year ago. As a ceramic student and practitioner, she has a profound appreciation for traditional patterns characterized by their structured and rhythmic designs. Six months ago, she began to focus on auspicious and intricately designed traditional motifs, meticulously recording them as sources of inspiration for her future creations. Leveraging her professional background, Yiri aims to incorporate these elements into her original works, infusing them with personal flair.

In recent years, the technique of 3D Underglaze decoration has been gaining prominence in the ceramics community. This method involves applying specific glaze materials to the ceramic body, which, upon high-temperature firing, results in raised textures or patterns on the surface, offering a unique tactile and visual experience. Unlike traditional embossed techniques that rely on carving or molding to achieve a three-dimensional effect, this glaze application provides artists with greater freedom, akin to painting. Yiri believes that the emergence of this technique opens new avenues for reimagining traditional patterns.

She has begun experimenting with the integration of 3D decoration and underglaze painting techniques to better showcase the structured beauty of Chinese traditional motifs. Underglaze painting involves decorating the ceramic piece before applying a transparent glaze and firing it at high temperatures, resulting in vibrant and durable designs protected beneath a glossy surface. This combination not only preserves the intricate details of traditional patterns but also enhances the work's dimensionality through the raised effects of the 3D decoration.

Throughout her creative process, Yiri often revisits and refines her designs, continually honing her skills. Moments of inspiration sometimes strike unexpectedly, prompting her to swiftly sketch out ideas and translate them into tangible pieces. This journey is rich with exploration and discovery, with each endeavor presenting both a challenge and an opportunity for growth.

The fusion of 3D decoration and underglaze painting offers vast potential for innovation in ceramic art. Through this approach, Chinese traditional motifs are revitalized with contemporary techniques, unveiling a distinctive artistic allure. Yiri looks forward to further exploring this realm in her future creations, contributing to the preservation and evolution of ceramic artistry.
